The Haiti Justice Partnership (formerly the Hastings to Haiti Partnership) advances the rule of law and promotes human rights in Haiti by supporting the country’s legal education and engaging in human rights advocacy. HHP represents a more than two-decade-long collaboration between UC Law SF and École Supérieure Catholique de Droit de Jérémie (ESCDROJ), the first law school in Haiti dedicated to preparing students to serve the public interest. Read more about what we do in Jérémie here.

Due to conditions on the ground in Haiti and the COVID-19 pandemic we have been unable to host a delegation to Haiti for several years. Instead, we have turned our attention to supporting Haitian asylum seekers stranded in Mexico. We visited Tapachula, Mexico in 2020 and Tijuana, Mexico in 2022 and 2023. A graduate of ESCDROJ and former judge and prosecutor joined us in Mexico in both years, and also joined us to testify before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in 2023. He also guided ESCDROJ and UC Law SF student efforts in documenting deteriorating conditions in the Jérémie, Haiti prison-released in a report which was cited in UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk's September 25, 2023 report on the human rights situation in Haiti. Over the years, we have also welcomed Haitian visitors to campus virtually and in-person.

In 2024, students visited both Tapachula and Mexico City, Mexico to meet with both asylum seekers and officials to help individuals navigate legal processes, and interview individuals about their experiences for public advocacy and education. Students are preparing a report on their findings.

To make these projects a reality, the student group is raising funds. We are asking for your help as we fundraise to cover the costs of our delegations to provide supervised legal assistance to Haitian asylum seekers navigating complex systems in Mexico and throughout the Americas in hopes of finding protection. Our fundraising efforts also usually include flights and accommodations for an ESCDROJ representative to travel to Mexico and assist in the delegation's efforts. Sadly, however, due to the dismal circumstances gripping Haiti in 2024, our dear friends and colleagues at ESCDROJ were unable to exit Haiti safely to join us in Mexico. This situation highlights all the more how critical your support is for the ongoing work of HJP and ECDROJ. Any additional money raised beyond our goal will be donated to ESCDROJ to advance the school's priorities.
